Longfader by Dan Lawonn
In 2005, I threw myself into writing and recording my own songs. Using only GarageBand and the built-in microphone of my trusty old iBook, I tracked everything guerilla-style in dorm rooms, offices, and stairwells. The recording quality wasn't perfect -- but the vibe was.
First titled "the EP" and eventually "Longfader," this collection of songs lived various short lives in coffee shops and on MySpace. Over time, I lost all the original sessions and was left with only copies of copies of files. Those recordings sat on a hard drive while I set off on a music career working as a sideman and producer.
I recently came across all of those wonderful, forgotten recordings and fell in love with my old songs all over again. I always swore that I'd rescue "Longfader" from its MySpace purgatory and give it an official release, so I spruced the old tracks up as best I could and sent them to all the digital outlets in an act of sudden, rash optimism.
More than half of these songs spent a good amount of time on MySpace; some of these songs have never been heard by anyone. The first 10 tracks were recorded with only the internal laptop mic; the last two songs used an actual microphone (!).
Begun in 2005, written and recorded through 2017...finally available in 2025.
