Days Ahead by Daniel Casares
Days Ahead delivers classics-inspired, highly energetic avant-garde performances featuring a double drum set ensemble and inspired alto and fake tenor (pitched-down alto) saxophone improvisations.
The idea for the album came when Daniel revisited the seminal album "Nation Time" by Joe McPhee, a record that the artist listened to extensively when he was first getting into jazz. This time around he decided to take on the whole ensemble himself, going for a chaotic sound leaning towards fusion. The song "tune for JH" provides a more modern yet still experimental approach, while the stoned out version of Sly & Family Stone's "Thank You" serves as grand finale. There are many moments of sax interplay throughout the record, achieving layered and exciting passages. The double drums can be disorienting at times, helping push the album towards free jazz.

Daniel Casares is a jazz guitarist, composer, and producer from A Coruña, Spain. He graduated from the Berklee College of Music in 2018. Daniel released the EP "Villa Bonita" in September 2022 on HOUT Records. His first album for the same label "From a Cabin in the Woods" came out in October 2023. The artist released the album "1971" in 2025, revisiting early jazz fusion with a futuristic spin.
