This was always my least favorite song on the album, but now that I have reread the lyrics, it’s pretty good.

Fun Fact #10

This song reminds me of where I lived when we recorded this album, in the warehouse district in downtown Minneapolis, a block from a huge Salvation Army store. I used to see my college friend, Joel Hodgson (creator and original star of Mystery Science Theater 3000), scrounging around for odd bits and pieces to make these crazy cool robots from. He only lived a couple blocks away and I remember visiting him in his warehouse loft once and laughing nonstop for an hour. One of the other cool things was that we had more clubs that had original bands playing every night than we had clubs with cover bands. So bands like us, Husker Du, the Replacements and Soul Asylum always had a place to play and try out our new stuff. We live in Tennessee now and love it, but I have some fond memories’ of being like Mary Tyler Moore, young and working in Minneapolis.

Where is he, the one that said it would be alright? Far away, and no one remembers his name. Here we stand facing the problem with eyes turned down, wondering how something like this could show up now. I believe that given the chance, we would turn it down. All the while, everyone’s standing around. Once or twice, it was on the tip of our tongues, but it didn’t come out. We’re all dressed up, but now we’ve got nowhere to go.

It was there b4, but no one talked about it, no one said a thing.

We were standing in the fortress that was holding back the tide. All the doors were open, but now we’re stuck inside.
