Hey guys, listen at the end of this song during the fade when I give my guitar tribute to David Bowie's "Fame". Very fun to play live when we would leave out notes and pretend to play them. The audience was always in on the joke.

We mixed this record in Ardent studios in Memphis (across the hall from where ZZ Top was finishing one of their albums), with Brian Foraker, who had just engineered Yes (Owner of a Lonely Heart) and John Hampton, who had just worked with the Gin Blossoms and our hometown boys, The Replacements. When John first heard the intro to this song, he listened a little bit and then stopped the tape. He looked at me and said, “Dan we have to fix this, you can’t play a major over a minor.” I knew this was illegal, but I loved the wrongness of it and the musical tension it created, plus it fit the lyrics perfectly. After some discussion I looked John straight in the eyes and said, “John…….Grow with me.” He paused for a moment, looked down and the whole room was silent. Then he looked right back at me, strait in the eyes and said, “Dan…….I’m gunna use that.” Needless to say it worked on him and I ran into him a few years later and he told me that he uses the “Grow with me” line all the time, whenever a band was hesitant to try something John knew was the right thing for them. Marty (the boy genius producer for the new record, and monster keyboardist) on the other hand, still struggles a bit having to play something he knows in his heart is wrong, no matter how many times I tell him to grow with me.
