Topnieją pierwsze śniegi, a wraz z nimi zapasy zgromadzone na zimę.
Po ugorach chodzi głód coraz częściej zaglądając ludziom do okien.
Miesiące zaciskania pasa stają się miesiącami zaciskania zębów.
Obok strawy zaczyna brakować nadziei.
Niejednego gorączka wywlecze z łóżka w środku nocy, by rzucał się nagi wśród błot, kniei i sobie tylko znanych majaków.

Wiosna?
“Wiosna!” wołają rozpaczliwie, rozbiwszy pośród pól na Jej przebłaganie ostatnie jajka, zleżałe i kruche.
“Wiosna?” pytają, zbierając złapaną we wnyki pustkę.
Zdawałoby się, że z mięsopustu zwierz ocalał tylko po to, by towarzyszyć w niedoli człowiekowi.
By wiatr grał mu na wystających żebrach.
By przypominać, że Kwietnej Pani nigdy nie śpieszno z rozdawaniem darów.

Wiosna.
Lepka odwilż uwalnia stwardniałą ziemię, odrzuca precz spękany, stary lód.
Nie zdoła tylko rozmrozić rąk stężałych w pięści.
Nie zetrze szronu ze zobojętniałych oczu.


Siedzimy więc, siedzimy sobie bezsilni razem.

I razem nam cicha izba tłoczy bezsilność w duszę. I tłoczy, leje się jak te śniegi stopione i napiera na pierś, aż dech w człowieku zanika.
I w tym bezdechu łkanie się przemienia w śmiech pusty, złośliwy, a ten znowu w rechot wesoły i rubaszny, tym rubaszniejszy i kołtuński bardziej, im bardziej pusta izba, bardziej pusty żołądek, im pustszy ten Przednówek.

I tym śmiechem, tym pomyleniem, co do niczego nie pasuje, się chyba pasiemy, głodni i puści jak skorupki po rozbitych jajkach. W skorupce jak w kościele nam się odbija niczym muzyka te wesołe łkanie i ten śmiech rozpaczliwy.

First snowdrifts grow thin, and with them stocks gathered for winter as well.
The hunger wanders through fallows, peeking through windows into people’s households.
Months of belt-tightening turn into months of teeth-clenching.
Apart from food, we lack hope.
Many get driven out of bed by fever to roam the woods and muddy fields naked, pursued by their own phantoms.


Spring?
“Spring!” they call desperately, crushing the last eggs, brittle and musty, to appease Her.
“Spring?” they ask, collecting the void trapped in snares.
It appears that the animals survived through Shrovetide only to be human’s companion in their misery.
So wind can play on protruding ribs.
So folk can be reminded that Flower Lady is never in a rush to give away Her gifts.


Spring.

Muddy thaw breaks the hardened soil free and casts away old, cracked ice.
Yet the thaw cannot melt the hands clotted into fists.
Nor can it wipe off the frost from listless eyes.


And so we sit, we sit helplessly together.

And as we sit the silent chamber presses the impotence into our souls. It keeps pressing our chests, pours down like melted snow, and kills one’s breath.
And as we sit breathless, sobbing turns into a hollow, malicious laugh, and then into a ribald and merry cackle, the more ribald and coarse the emptier is the chamber, the emptier is one’s belly, the emptier is this Scarcity.

And this laugh, this senseless insanity, keeps us fed, it appears so, as we are starved and hollow like broken eggshells. In those shells our cheerful sob and desperate laughter keep echoing like in a church.

We wander between Poland and Scandinavia, playing at barn dance parties, funeral banquets and in the sacred groves. On the way, we stop neverwhere at the painted gates of the taverns standing on the frozen Baltic Sea.

We play music to dance to and to ponder over for villagers and townspeople alike.
