Cruel Payback by Cybershade
Everything has a cost.
When people were forced to move to this land, one calamity after another fell upon them: meagre harvests, cattle were dying from strange illness; and when snow fell one summer people finally sink into despair. Then the elders went to last resort - they entered into a pact with the ancient spirits which (according to legend) dwell in the forest nearby. In exchange for the welfare of the settlement, the spirits require to give them half of their children. And this dreadful pact was agreed. There were other points that should never be violated. But...
Years of a happy and comfortable life led to the fact that people quickly forgot those to whom they should be thankful for it. And soon the pact was violated by people. Spirits will come for rightfully due to them. Oh, don't even doubt it! And the cost of this ungratefulness will be disparate higher that was once paid.
