When I was
Just seventeen
I’d dreamed up a scheme
Try my luck at chance
I’d never
Dressed up in drag
Or carried Mother’s handbag

I borrowed
The family car
Didn’t have to go far
To an adjacent town
Straight to the

I had a note in the bag

Now I find

I entered
Through swinging doors
Across a white marble floor

I handed the
Teller my note
After he read what I wrote
I gave him Mother’s bag
Hurriedly
I walked to the car
Didn’t have to go far

I buried the
Cash in our yard
No one followed the car

A few summers
Had come and gone
