Monteverdi characteristically illustrates the text of Psalms 96 and 98 in this light, jubilant motet, broadening for the phrase “for he has done marvelous things” and adding short runs illustrating the instruments in the text playing. It was published in 1620 in one of his students’ anthologies, but borrows a particular phrase from an earlier motet published in 1590, which could indicate a composition date much earlier than its publication.
