Cassiopeia from Por Vida by Castle Pines

Cassiopeia is an intentionally droll and sleepy sung lament of differing travelers viewpoints throughout history, partly inspired by nautical themes, including the Constellation and Greek Mythological character the song is named after. A narrative of loss, forgotten meaning and questioning the reality of the status quo, the song parallels the Roman Empire, the Roman Catholic Church and Modern day America as civilizations defeated by the internalization of simply not caring anymore.

Musically the song takes cues from 90's alt, shoe-gaze, 2000's radio indie, and even some black metal, The song is a slow burn build up that relies on interval changes I-ii in the tonic key of G , giving the minor emphasis while keeping a driving and light sense of a major key. Starting the song in the instrumental version of what could be called a chorus, the song keeps an ambiguous sense from definitive sections as in the traditional AABA style of a rock song, this allows the lyrics and the morose, dreamy aesthetic of the song to be at the forefront. Cassiopeia does not follow the popular formula but rather relies on dynamic subtetly and relatable lyrical tropes and nuances to convey a feeling rather than a statement.
