BEEN QUIET
It appeared very much as if it had been invited
Without any of us setting a place at the table.
Had it crept in any quieter, stepped forward more confidently,
We would cry “Impossible!”
But this was not the wind letting Elijah in.
This was waking up fifteen in a whole new body.
This was getting punched in the face until your eyes colors change.
This was 2020.
Let’s modify how we speak from the waist up.
Sidewalks are of no use anymore, every street is a parade at six feet.
Where have all the smokers gone?
I suppose I could never really see them at six feet.
We just don’t get the smell of dirt here.
We don’t get much scents at all.
Never has a leaden sky been so gin clear.
We don’t make much sense at all.
But this was not the wind letting Elijah in.
This was getting punched in the face until your eye colors change.
Had it crept in any quieter, stepped forward more confidently,
We would cry
A great time to be alive and reaching out,
Again and again and again.
To start something, to make something, to breathe life into, time into,
A great time.
Again and again and again.
