Pete Johnson
Boogie-woogie pianist Pete Johnson first met blues shouter Big Joe Turner at the Backbiters Club, a speakeasy on Independence Avenue. After an extended engagement at the Sunset Club, Johnson and Turner moved to New York where they played Café Society, Carnegie Hall and other top venues. In 1941, Johnson recorded “627 Stomp” for the first album of Kansas City jazz.
