I left my shoes at my lover’s in the city
And when I came back the next year
I dug them out from under his bed
And tried them on for size.

They felt weird to break back in
And to be on this road again
But their soles hadn't
Given in to their demise.

Back in my old shoes again
They keep saying one more bend Cause they know where they’re going
In the end.

The road is hard and wearing
But as long as I am wearing them
My tender feet won’t have to
Touch the cold hard ground.

My soles are getting thinner
And soon I will be giving in
To bury my old shoes
In the cold hard ground.

Though my laces tie me down, I can't keep my feet on the ground Though my tongues are tightly bound, I can't keep my head out of the clouds.
