Visionary Tones by Solo shakuhachi honkyoku and contemporary music

Originally a two CD set, this album contains four Kinko-style honkyoku (traditional shakuhachi meditative solo pieces) and two contemporary shakuhachi solo pieces. The contemporary works, Hirose Ryōhei's 'Byoh' and Takahashi Yuji's 'Shigure,' 'Kagerō' and 'Katsuragi,' maintain the sublime, meditative essence of the old honkyoku while exploring new horizons in solo shakuhachi music.

Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, a shakuhachi master, writer and ethnomusicologist, lived in Japan over 4 decades, studying under Living National Treasure Goro Yamaguchi. His musical world balances traditional shakuhachi music, modern compositions, improvisation and cross-genre work with musicians, dancers, poets and visual artists. He performs and teaches around the world.
