Kimani Gray by Chris Dowding & Laure Van Minden

The thirteenth track of the 'Black Lives Matter' project - a collaboration between Norwich-based trumpeter Chris Dowding and artist Laure Van Minden.

A bass synth marks out Kimani's name reversed, in musical notes, while the trumpet melody spells out the place of death - 'East Flatbush'. A set of distorted loops behind express our anger.

The track ends with the aftermath - reverberating sounds...

Chris:

"It’s interesting starting the track with the name on the keyboard (which I quite often do) - it’s the first layer, and like a ritual of playing and repeating the name... Maybe like kind of welcoming the spirit or something..."

Laure:

"As for Kimani, equally striking as it looks like he's been, his life anyway, decapitated..."

Trumpeter Chris Dowding and artist Laure Van Minden are both based in Norwich.

'Black Lives Matter' is their first full duo collaboration project. It commemorates people who have died or been attacked in relation to the Black Lives Matter movement, through playing their names.

This uses an alphabet system invented by Devon-based composer Hugh Nankivell.
