Cassette Art Classics presents an archival digital reissue of
Two Drones by Richard Franecki
originally released on cassette on his Uddersounds label in 1983 reissued by Cause And Effect in 1985
This publication has been authorized by Richard Franecki.
On January 1, 2026 I emailed Rick Franecki:
"I'm digitizing Two Drones, and I'm wondering if you could tell me the method by which you recorded it. Two cassette decks? Sound-on-sound? Reel-to-reel? Also, is the ARP 2600 what you used? Or something else?"
On January 2, 2026 Franecki replied:
"Most of the stuff from that era was recorded very simply. I had two cassette decks (for duplicating purposes). I recorded everything pretty much live, onto one of the cassette decks. As to the musical hardware, PROBABLY it was the Arp 2600 and a Moog Prodigy. Those are what I had back then. Any 'overdubbing' if you want to call it that, was done LIVE. I had a small 4 channel mixer I bought at Radio Shack, and would often have more than one tone source going at once.”

notes by Hal McGee:
On January 1, 2026 I digitized the copy of Two Drones that Richard Franecki sent to us at Cause And Effect in 1985. The cassette is marked as “Master”, and it is the tape that Debbie Jaffe and I used to duplicate copies whenever we received an order for it.
I played the cassette on a Tascam 202MKVII deck, through a Xenyx mini-mixer, and transcribed directly into Audacity.
I have tried my best to capture the sound and feeling of listening to the cassette as you might have heard it in 1985.
As you listen, you can look at a scan of the original cassette cover (included with the purchase of a download).
The Cause And Effect 1985 reissue cassette cover was designed and laid out by Debbie Jaffe.
Cassette Art Classics features classic DIY tapes of homemade music from the 1980s and 90s at affordable prices. All archival issues are authorized by the original label or the artist.
