Surfaces by Calypso

After going folk-prog with “The Empty Seat” in 2022 and delivering an eclectic mix of styles on “Parasaurolophus” in 2024, our new effort "Surfaces" features some more new wave and power pop-textures, and in that it is certainly our album that’s the furthest away from the very acoustic guitar-driven, folk-laden stuff we used to do with Sven back in the day. Influenced by new-found favourites from the late 70s, I attempted to streamline my songwriting and focus on clear structures, faster tempos, and memorable hooks rather than adventurous left turns, key changes, or lush arrangements. Some of those elements still shine through here and there, but I’m sure you’ll recognize that change in direction if you know our older work.
Thematically, the eight (and a half) new songs are loosely held together by the idea of, as the chorus of the title track phrases it, the surface being the real thing. Instead of psychologising and overthinking, it can be helpful to recognise that sometimes a smooth and clean surface (e.g. a neatly structured hard disk, a great looking new dress, or a nice melody in your head) is all you need to have a good time!

Hi there, we're Calypso, a rock trio from Germany: Sven † (voc, dr, git), Michael (voc, git, bass) and Christian (keyboards). Inspired by the great classics of rock and folk, we started writing and recording songs as teenagers. Now, in our thirties, we still love working on our material - in spite of things like jobs, fatherhood, etc. We hope you'll enjoy our handmade tunes!
