Peter from Merlin EP by Calico Tweed

I’ve written a few songs inspired by movies, and so far I’m proudest of this one. The Power of the Dog, which sparked this song, was a spiritual experience for me. I loved the character of Peter, and once the plot twist unraveled, I was able to connect it to the rest of the film in a way that I hadn’t before. I was so impacted that I had to write a song the day after I watched it. That movie’s score is a cello-driven soundscape courtesy of Jonny Greenwood, so I knew I had to get some cello in there. Banjo too. The last verse was a short poem I wrote a while ago, and I figured it would work here since I clearly had a muse.

That story was perfection

The screen is truly graced, the tale is slowly paced

The previous events had kept me in suspense
Though your reveal was shocking it immediately made sense

Of men and muscle

Though you share an idol
You’re feeling homicidal
There’s fire amongst the cold, you’re timid but you’re bold
Men are complicated and there’s several in that mold
Your mother’s in a snare, she’s drinking in despair
But you would murder for her safety ‘cause you truly care
Through time you’ve been a target as you differ from the norm
So cold, yet so warm

I’m thankful for my muses even if they’d not approve
Or if I’ll never meet them or am shy to make a move
But when inspiration comes along and gives my heart a shove
The good things that propel me all deserve some extra love
Just one thing can go a long way and create a storm
