Cinematic Funk Masters Calibro 35 Announce Exploration (Deluxe Edition). Listen to the first bonus track ‘Harlem Nocturne’.
Instrumental cinematic legends Calibro 35 return with the Deluxe Edition of their acclaimed album Exploration, out February 6th via Record Kicks. The expanded release includes three brand-new bonus tracks, deepening the band’s signature fusion of cinematic funk, jazz, and groove-driven experimentation. The first bonus track ‘Harlem Nocturne,’ available from October 15th on all digital platforms, is a soulful reinterpretation of the jazz classic made famous by The Lounge Lizards, among others.
“The Lounge Lizards were masters of attitude and a defining voice of early 1980s New York, blending jazz and no wave. In Exploration, we couldn’t overlook such a powerful hybrid. And let’s be honest… Harlem Nocturne is a real pleasure to play,” explain Calibro 35.
At the heart of Exploration lies the band’s enduring passion for musical discovery, collective performance, and spontaneous creation — the very essence of jazz. The album marks Calibro 35’s return to independent label Record Kicks, two years after their previous full-length Nouvelles Aventures (Universal Music), and builds on the adventurous spirit of their Jazzploitation EP (2024).
“Eighteen years into our career, we’re back to doing what we did on our first album: taking other people’s music and making it our own,” explains the band. “As with Jazzploitation, we continue to engage with classic tunes and reinterpret them through our lens.” Recorded live with minimal overdubs and no metronome, Exploration (Deluxe Edition) captures Calibro 35’s raw interplay and unfiltered energy. It’s an album played “from the hip” — a bold, freewheeling dive into sound and intuition.
Praised by Rolling Stone as “the most fascinating, retro-maniac and genuine thing to have happened to Italy in recent years,” Calibro 35 have built an international reputation as one of the most exciting independent bands in the world. Their music has been sampled by Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, and The Child of Lov (feat. Damon Albarn), and they’ve collaborated with PJ Harvey, Mike Patton, and Stewart Copeland.
