cattail seeds are bursting their seams
we’re dying of thirst in our April dreams
about rainbarrels brimming and
fat fish swimming up swollen streams
the good wife sowing her winter beans
but summer is coming
so why am I strumming the blues?

as the real cat scratches and the screen door catches
just before it slams
I slouch about in my papa jams
if cattle are calving
could laurel be having her lambs?
