FAIRFIELD

I took the photo from the fridge
it was the one where you look so pretty
then I took the parkway to the bridge
because from there I could see the city

and of the things I cannot do
the hardest of all is leaving you
but you leaving me
well that wouldn’t fly away

Only the ghost of frost was out there in the field
and even in the shadows melting.

and all the things I should have said,
get stuck in circles inside my head
and every time I try to turn away
and heave a sigh

Forget the fancy restaurant
there’s not a dime in the hand I’m spending
Might even end up with what we want
still some time for a happy ending

But I might be wrong about that you know
I’d be the first to admit that I should let it go
But either way I should say That I know
neither how or why

Instead of flying in style tonight
because I never took the time to arrange a flight
I’m in the rain on the road not the right
way to say goodbye

It’s in the frame by the window
It’s by the clock on the wall
and if I ever even time take the time to notice it
It isn’t there at all
