Influential Lisbon duo BLOQO land on Aus Music with a bass-heavy trio of global rhythms
Branko and Pedro da Linha follow up their debut release on Enchufada with club tracks inspired by the DJs, records and experiences that shape them
BLOQO is a new project from two seasoned artists with respected solo careers. Enchufada founder and Buraka Som Sistema co-founder Branko has long been shaping Lisbon’s part in the global club conversation, while fellow mainstay Pedro da Linha is one of the city's most inventive producers and DJ residents.
This new coming together was born from late-night studio sessions and long conversations over dinner. It is less about music enriched with the Lisbon-centric DNA they have centred before now, and more about unrestricted and personal artistic expression. The project is a liberation that allows these accomplished producers to reconnect with the pure, instinctive act of making tracks for dancefloors while keeping their signature textural and polyrhythmic instincts intact.
Opener 'Floorwrk' is alive with organic percussion, vocal chants and bird calls that pepper big kicks and warped bass. Synthetic textures and hooky leads bring plenty of global flavours to this most rich, rubbery groove. 'Tell Me +' has more light, delicate harmonies and steel drum sounds. An intimate vocal whisper infuses the shuffling, swaggering rhythm with soul and makes it both physically moving and emotionally touching. Closer 'Jupiter' is another richly layered sound with Afro drum patterns making way for heavenly synth breakdowns. All throughout, the airwaves are alive with soft shakers, deft percussive hits and treated vocals that make for an immersive world of cultured and worldly sound.
BLOQO's Floorwrk EP comes on Aus Music on Dec 5th..
