Mirror Dub from Mirage EP by biodub
The original idea came from the mirror in my bathroom at home. Since I am a professional drummer, I'm always drumming on my surroundings. One day I started drumming on the mirror's surface. The sound was so rich with harmonic overtones, it sounded like a drum that could be played in chords. I immediately got my field recorder and started recording.
The first idea for Mirror Dub was to do a really minimalistic track, that focuses on the recorded "mirror-chord playing" with some nice dubbing buut it turned out to become maybe the most evolving and changing production process I've ever made.
While Schweben was finished more or less in one session, that was clearly inspired, Mirror Dub took years to find his final existence. There are over 150 versions on my computer. Of course not every version is completely different, but the track took many different directions over the time.
There are tracks that I begin, that never get finished. Some only exist as parts in my live sets and others just don't feel right after a while, so I don't continue working them out. Mirror Dub never was one of those. I liked every version of it but every time I heard it, something new came to my mind and I recorded in different synths, guitars and percussion. At the end of each day, it sounded completely different. Last summer, which was incredibly hot and dry in Germany, I was working outside with my headphones. Here, Mirror Dub was finally arranged completely. Afterwards I got back to the studio to do the final mixing. Mirror dub really was some kind of obsession. I'm really happy to finally share this baby with the audience.
