Devon based Billie Maree draws inspiration from her connection to the polarities of the human experience: the dark and the light. Her lyrics aim to invoke an inner understanding of ourselves. Each song contains its own essence, allowing a blend of genres. New to putting her music out into the world, she is currently in the process of recording and self-producing her first EP which will be released later in 2023. Whale Eyes is her first single and a taste of more to come.

There is a tender authority in Billie Maree’s voice which demands attention from the very start of the song. It has a deep richness and tonality that is entirely her own.

The sombre sparsity of the cello accompaniment is perfectly chosen. There are echoes of ancient celtic folk in the melodic structure, which rises and falls like waves gently lapping at the shore of some windswept Scottish loch. Like a clock the guitar welcomes us in and keeps time throughout. Fink-like in its quiet insistency and Billie’s fingers never miss a beat.
The quality of songwriting on show here would grab your attention on its own. When a songwriter takes on all the recording and production duties as well, it’s an entirely different skill set that asks many new questions of the artist, questions of a technical nature that can take years to reach any level of proficiency. The finished article reflects more of the artist than when production duties are shared. Whale Eyes is just this, all Billie Maree from conception to completion.

“The inspiration for Whale Eyes came my closest friend telling me about a vision she had during a meditation. The song is a journey deep into the womb of a whale to meet and come face to face with a hidden part of oneself, holding reverence for and honouring that process.” says Billie Maree.

Born in London and raised in Devon - Billie Maree has always had a free spirit. She has lived and worked in Australia, travelled in the US, India and the Far East, is a trained yoga teacher, experienced vegan chef and has most recently grown food for a community in the Spanish desert for a year. The thread of music and songwriting has been present throughout and, arriving back in her home town Totnes in the Winter of 2022, she knew she was ready to fully embrace this part of her.
Whale Eyes was self recorded by Billie Maree at Siren’s Studio in Falmouth after she won a week's bursary to learn about production there.
