The rain is so cold
Like a night that I remember
Staring out at the freezing puddles way down on the road
We were still there
For so many different reasons
Any charm that the skyline once held vanished long ago

We had time to talk
From the mountains of St. Mary’s
Though by then it was mostly empty with Christmas on the way
But late in the night
We could play the Chinese checkers
All around you could hear the voices
The dying and the safe

And in that world it’s all so clearly drawn
Like love’s the only age you’ve got to know
And the song that I’ve forgotten over time
If I could only find it now
Could it really take this long, and make it through somehow

The glow from the trees
And the sacred songs were faded
In the light of an ancient hallway that we walked arm in arm
