And he warned us, as if they are ever used again, it may be by the thousands or the tens of thousands. What might change is the method of delivery and as it may reflect new possibilities to intercept them.

He saw it as a weapon for aggressors with intrinsic elements of surprise and terror. He told us about a colleague, a man who was most deeply committed to the welfare and the growth of science, who advised him not to give too much weight in public words about the terror of atomic weapons as they are and can be.

He reminded us, that we know how much more terrible they can be made. And that it could lead to a rejection hostile to science and may turn people away from science.
