cool & still, birdsong fills the air
threads the needle that sews despair
to the wet longing lips of spring
& all the sorrow she gently brings

from the table of forgotten feasts
as the light emerges to the east
the plates & silver dusty with days
a finger finds her lust betrayed

cast off the short shadows of noon
ease into the soft blue flesh of the moon
her mouth is the river swollen & long
that flows from her heart into her song

the taste of her lips of early morning breath
as darkness fades somewhere to the west
& her body is swallowed by hot hungry hands
by man's endless & angry demands

but the body is wooden & knotted with limbs
& the patience of love is the ocean within
there can be no forgiveness where there was no deceit
the head is a long long way from the feet

she widens herself with warmth & pause
& spreads open to perfections perfect flaws
at the birth of light the lungs are filled
for the born to live blood must be spilled
