Second Thoughts by Ben Haskins Quartet

Written though-out the ups and downs of 2021, the record showcases a diverse spectrum of instrumental music centered around improvisation with its roots in the tradition of jazz and black American music.

The quartet, which features members of Wandering Monster, Slow Lorris, Jasmine and K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade came together through jam nights, mutual projects and a love for improvised music. After releasing their first single on Hyde Park Book Club records last year the band have grabbed the attention of JazzFM, WorldwideFM, Jazzwise, Jazz Revelations and BBC Introducing.

Following a few select shows over the last year the band have used their time to find a comfortable space in the studio and created a dynamic yet intimate sound. Allowing space for soloists to imprint their personality with open improvisation and intense musical dialogue, the material draws influence from jazz scenes on both sides of the Atlantic, taking inspiration from John Coltrane, Shabaka Hutchings, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ambrose Akinmusire, and Bill Frisell.

Exploring open, melodic compositions and expansive improvisations, Leeds-based Ben Haskins Quartet draws influence from jazz scenes on both sides of the Atlantic, taking inspiration from John Coltrane, Shabaka Hutchings, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Guiliana, and Bill Frisell.
