Béatrice Graf: suitcase drums, diddley bows, kalimba, objects, voice, Bontempi accordion, lyrics and compositions

Since 2003, Geneva-based drummer Béatrice Graf (winner of the 2019 Swiss Music Prize) has been practising in parks on "home-made" drums, using a 1940 wooden suitcase as a bass drum and everyday objects. Since 2016, in addition to the drums she has almost always played, Béatrice Graf has taken up singing with her duo Ester Poly. In 2018, she received two one-string guitars as a fee for a concert in Fribourg, which she immediately adopted. She plays them flat on her suitcase with her drumsticks. By adding effects pedals to the setup, the missing link between berimbao, Metallica and psychedelic rock was finally filled and her "one woman band" took shape.

Before the concert, there's a suitcase on wheels. After the concert too. During the concert, everything in this mobile trunk unfurled on stage. Not much. And yet a lot. Enough for Béatrice Graf, a multifaceted musician for whom music holds no secrets, to set the scene for a changing world in different tableaux. While percussion acts as the general structure of the concert, a number of landscapes are woven together by her diddley bows, used like a multi-purpose Lap Steel. Because on this strings, Béatrice Graf strikes and caresses. We hear Led Zep, Ravi Shankar, Fela Kuti. Transe, meditation, rock, folklore, there's enough in the mobile trunk of the Genevan artist, here as a one-woman band, to remake the world. And then close it again until the next concert.
