With Warmaster Horus on the threshold of death after sustaining a wound from the potent Chaos weapon known as the Anathame,
Horus' senior commanders of the Luna Wolves XVIth Legion Astartes were desperate to save The life of their Primarch. Rushing
horus from the moon of Davin, they descended to the planet's surface.

Not trusting the Davinite Priests, but having no other choice, The Legionaires allowed Horus to be treated by the priests of Davin's
serpent lodge. Erebus and the priests, who were in truth a Chaos Cult, managed to turn the Warmaster against the Emperor during
his recovery. Employing psychic sorcery, which had been outlawed by the Emperor at the council of Nikea, they showed the
warmaster a twisted, half-true vision of the future imperium of Mankind should the Emperor be allowed to continue to rule. As Horus
was overwhelmed by the vision, Erebus spoke poisoned words to him, nurturing the seeds of jealousy, ambition, fear of irrelevancy,
desire for power, and resentment toward his father, after the Emperor abandoned the Great Crusade to return to Terra.

Magnus the Red, Primarch of the Thousand Sons Legion, attempted to reveal the manipulations of the Chaos Gods for the lies and
half-truths that they were, by psychically projecting himself into Horus' false vision. He pleaded with his brother to remain loyal
to the emperor and the dream of an enlightened Imperium of Mankind spanning the entire galaxy. Erebus, wearing the face of one of
Horus' most trusted sons, convinced the warmaster falsely that Magnus had fallen from grace, claiming Magnus' own psychic
sorcery as evidence of his disloyalty. Not knowing that the same sorcery had been employed by Erebus to form the vision, Horus
gave in to his pride and swore himself to the gods of Chaos, in return for his life and the power to dethrone his father, the Emperor.
In doing so, Horus became the Warmaster of Chaos, ushering in an age of darkness and bringing about the great galactic civil war
known as the Horus Heresy.
