Songs by Ed, Will and Ginger

We made this album before our 2009 walk to Wales. Eight months of hard-strolling later, we'd still not released it.

In the Wales for a woodland winter of house-building, we finally let the CD fly, powering our global comms with bike genny and dongle.

This album is of its time. You may find it rushed, but we were younger then.

This is how our original booklet introduced it:

"We are Ed, Will and Ginger, and these are some of the songs we like to sing.

The songs were recorded at home in Kent just before setting out walking again.

This CD is supporting our expedition around the British Isles. We aim to learn to walk well, and to live and travel outdoors in respectful, subtle and varied ways.

Song sustains this journey, keeps us in bread and butter, our spirits and strength high, and brings fine folk for us to meet.

We are trying to get to know this land. We hope to gain the skills necessary for moving through her kind wilds and pleasing wastes, to travel through all winds, suns and rains.

We wish to find the histories formed on this land, to know the tales of those gone before, and to share what we find.

This is a full time expedition, as we are on foot, without support teams, tents or an itinerary. We carry everything we need on our backs, and sticks in our hands.

This is not a re-creation of theoretical nomadism. It is a modern attempt to merge the tenets of historical sustainability with the possibilities afforded by technological development.

To put it simply, we’re not really sure what we’re doing, and are basically winging it, but: it seems to work.

We’ve done this sort of thing before, and recommend it heartily. Going walking for many months is something everyone should try, to know it is possible and wonderful.

Travelling on foot is the tradition that defines our particular ape species. It is enervating and invigorating, and challenging in unexpected ways. Though pleasant and delightful, there are dragons.

Not the cold, nor the wet, but interior storms threaten to blow us off course. But walking lets us see these deep tempests, reflected in the mirror of balanced Nature. They might then become obvious and ridiculous, and they can quieten.
