We're Golden from Pixie Hollow by Asher Kai
After being introduced and compared to Daniel Johnston by my friend Violet, I spent a lot of time listening to his work and realized that the raw expressive vulnerability he had in his art is something I also have in my own way. I was able to connect with a lot of the concepts he wrote about and got in my own head on a long dark walk- you know how it is LOL.
Soon after, I created this song which took stylistic inspiration from Johnston, while feeling swamped in a realization that the music world is always going to be dominated by young musicians. Youth is replaceable, and while we are currently the product, we don't tend to realize we will expire past that prime age for algorithmic and pop culture favoritism. I also noticed that inherently by being a musician by profession, writing songs about my experiences, I am turning my pain, joy, wisdom and love into a product.
At my roots, it is far more than that for me. I share my art out of passion, and I have hope that me and my friends' impacts last much longer than a surge of post-quarantine creative youth. But, in the moment of writing this song, I was facing a true sense of hopelessness.
