The world with which we engage politically is outside our heads; our perceptions, ideas, and actions in the political sphere must rely on images of reality provided by others. The type of images transmitted, who selects them, who decides what to say and what not to say, and how to say it are therefore crucial for the functioning of democracies, for the selection of politicians through elections, and subsequently in holding them accountable to the electorate.

In Italy, this phenomenon is glaring: since the early 2000s, Israel has become a model, a laboratory that the European and Italian right has increasingly looked to with interest. This trend emerged at the same time as the global right incorporated the fight against Palestinian terrorism into the broader scenario of the war on terror sparked by the events of September 11, the invasion of Iraq, and Afghanistan. In this context, the state of Israel was elevated to the front line of a war defending the West against Islamic extremism. Xenophobic anti-Islamism became the new ideological glue.

Ensuring all of this is the power of media language that shapes public opinion with a narrative that, under the guise of an objective account, serves as a propaganda tool, perpetuating a narrative in line with a pro-Zionist and pro-apartheid agenda.

This framing not only distorted public perception but also contributed to the normalization of discriminatory policies that support the status quo of oppression and marginalization by offering a single interpretation of what is happening in Palestine.
