I’m tired of
Smoke on jackets from cigarettes
And old voicemails from high school girlfriends
Planning heists and skipping town
Overdosing on colors preceding the “out”

I’m tired of
Traffic lights in a run down city
Hanging Christmas lights on a basement ceiling
Carhartt pants and studded belts
The midwest breaks my heart like nothing else

And the winter’s coming in
And the cars start crashing on the interstate again
And the winter’s all but through
So I’ll distract myself by writing songs about
The only things I know

Am I big enough to fill these shoes?
Can I carry the weight of a young rolling stone?
‘Cause those kids are just like me a decade ago
And they’ve gotten real jobs
