The Voices from Insomniac by Brandon Brooks
I knew I wanted to do an acapella track for the album all the way at the beginning, but I wasn't sure if I could. I lost my voice from a simple cold in December of 2023, and by late January of 2024 I still hadn't gotten my range back.
I've had material that I've been working on (procrastinating really) since 2022, but there was always an excuse. My recording room wasn't perfect. My mic was not the best. Eventually I got closer to actually recording (the instrumentals have been done for awhile), and I lost my voice.
January was bad. I don't have much that I feel like I am good at, so singing is important to me. I kind of just gave up and was majorly depressed for the month. Until I heard about February Album Writing Month. I put my all into it, and it turned out to be a "Use it Or Lose it" situation.
Leap Year was recorded like, two or three days after learning about FAWM? My voice may sound decent there, but I had no control of my falsetto and upper ranges. During that time I made it a goal to take better care of my voice and also push it, and that by the end I wanted an acapella song ABOUT losing your voice, because that's like, deep man.
Anyways, I'm pretty proud of it if only for the gnarly whistle note I hit in the final harmonies. My voice still isn't 100% (falsetto control is not back to normal), but I was able to do that, when a month ago I was depressed and thinking I'd never sing again.
Yes, that's dramatic, but that's how I felt. This project kind of saved me, in a way, and I'm grateful for it.
