Lying Low by Anthony Kost
I knew a rabbit once. His name was Biscuit and he came from good stock. Bred to be the choice pet for middle class children. Clear eyes and shiny coat, Didn’t mind a squeeze and a pat. Biscuit was quick and difficult to get back in his hutch after playtime. During his daily backyard release program he would devour waste lettuce leaves with one eye looking to the borders. I watched him do mental calculations of distance and time and survey the weak points of the perimeter. I knew it was only a matter of time. And so began our six week “Cool Hand Luke’ relationship. Biscuit being Luke and me being “the man with no eyes.”(Walking Boss Godfrey) I admired Biscuit’s tenacity, I understood his firm resolve for freedom.
And so when he escaped for the final time, I smiled and declared to small children that biscuit is on the lam. He’s off grid, gone dark. He’s lying low.
