LANGUAGE.

"Sometimes reality is the strangest fantasy of all…"

Over seven years ago, I tried to explain this record with a story; when someone asked me what the record was about, and what I stammered out—

“I said, ‘I think about [Death] so much it doesn't mean what it's supposed to anymore. It's a little bit because it's 'the end,' but not in the 'suicide' way (though that comes up once or twice), but in the way that eventually all things lead to it. Death I mean.’

I thought more and said, ‘and y'know, sometimes people say 'there was A Death,' and they don't mean necessarily that someone died. Or even that something died. But it represents an end.’

I kept thinking, though. "An end." But to affix "death" to something doesn't actually represent any sort of finality, does it? If anything, it lends obsession and mourning (another kind of obsession) to it. Whatever "it" is— and it might not even matter. Pygmalion sculpting a ghost.”

And… sure! I wasn’t wrong. Language originally came out during a heady period of loss, of coming to terms with death. Family friends were starting to pass, and it was a new thing. But if Language was a wake, the passage of time has revealed a better truth.

Time revealed that Language is a wake for my masculinity, for my maleness, for my life as a man. The period of time I spent working on Language (around five years!) coincided with me meeting trans people for the first time, realizing transition was something that people *did,* and finally realizing it was the thing *I* wanted.

Of course, I did not consciously realize that while making Language. But it’s the best lens to approach its occasionally darker tones— the line has been used to death, but Language is truly the darkest part of the night before the dawn breaks. It is without a doubt my egg work.
