Northling return with their second single from their upcoming Hallowed Ground EP, ‘Wild’; following up ‘Lights’ before finishing on the focus track ‘Hallowed Ground’.
The six-strong collective from Lancashire formed as an improvisational group of like-minded musicians in 2017. The band’s subsequent releases (Blue, Ways of Seeing, Tycho, Hallowed Ground) have garnered support from BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music and marked an exciting evolution to the haunting, cinematic indie-electronica that is so distinctively Northling.
Hallowed Ground is the band’s third EP, the second to be released through Reflections. ‘Wild', with its synth arps and urgent, rolling drums reveals another side to the band; more forthright and energetic. Throughout the track, vocalist Joe Spencer’s lyrics explore the modern detachment from wildness and the urge to escape into nature, a call that is answered by Charlotte Rumley’s haunting declaration of “into the wild we go...”. With its specific sentiment and phrasing, this vocal part of Rumley’s was lifted from a different demo to become the focus and inspiration behind the writing of Wild.
