right // left has a haunting, lullaby-like quality– calming and enveloping, with a simplicity that reflects the ambiguity of its inspiration. It’s filled with blurred images, imprecise memories, and unfinished thoughts, mirroring a story both complex and unresolved.
The song is written from the perspective of the daughter of Sarah "Sally" Hemings, Jefferson’s enslaved lover. In the lyrics, “she” refers to her mother, while “he” reflects her controversial father, who, in this story, may have wanted to do the right thing but felt unable, or unwilling, to fully act on it much like the history tells us.
