Behavioural expectations are foundational within the structure of human relationships. Regardless of the type of relationship, there is a somewhat coherently defined set of activities and responses which constitute a definition of that relationship. Yet these expectations immediately create a disposition towards disappointment given that there is very little consistency when it comes to individual manifestations of such behaviours. We are predisposed to be dissatisfied with the responses and reactions of others since our personal, individual standards remain largely private and incommunicable. No one really knows what is truly expected of them in any given circumstance and, in many cases, they are simply indifferent to those expectations anyway. The result is that relationships are constantly undergoing a series of conflicts between what we perceive is a minimum or “reasonable” response or reaction and what we actually receive. What we look for from others is rarely what we get.
