Belief is a failure of comprehension. It is the attempt to assign some meaning and value to interactions beyond our understanding. We encounter phenomena on a daily basis which baffles us and drives our fear of the unknown to manifest delusional phantasms; beings and entities capable of feats beyond our mortal means. We cling to these like nervous children clutching mother’s skirt, hoping that they cloak and conceal us from whatever imagined or real dangers they might imply. Each group, based on geographical and sociological divisions, begins to weave a delicate and complex web of culturally sustained deceit and denial. We call it “mythology” and then enshrine it upon altars we must refuse to assail with any logic should that rationality prove to be an undoing of our false sense of security. As knowledge slowly advances with the experience of exposure and analysis, inevitable errors are used as justification to restrain the process and revert back to our primitive interpretations.
