Next to religion and philosophy, creative self-expression is the most significant mechanism employed by humanity as we attempt to comprehend the nature of existence and our position therein. Art is often employed in the service of these twins. For the most part, such works have, until recently, strived to be representational in their execution. Their creators have sought to capture the natural reality of observed phenomena in order to hold it still for a time and contemplate its function. Yet such efforts can never be more than mere approximation and are incapable or capturing any true essence of the subjects they seek to emulate. A painting lacks the dimensional depth of the real object and the painter must employ deception and trickery to convince the eye that it is more than a flat surface covered in pigment. Yet it is the wildly divergent inaccuracies of representational art which often inspire the most interest as they reveal the potential for new contexts which we might inhabit.
