Following a string of self-released club mutations through his SSS imprint, Bristol-based producer SSSLIP steps up with Pond Gong, a four-track EP on hometown label Amity. It marks his first solo outing away from his own label since 2022, a milestone that feels both personal and symbolic. Long aligned with Amity’s forward-thinking ethos, SSSLIP distills his distinctive blend of dub-informed low-end, crooked percussion and sound system experimentation into four unpredictable and highly potent club constructions.
Pond Gong is a tight, bass-laden exploration of SSSLIP’s world: chopped and screwed FX stutter across warped vocal fragments, fidgeting percussion jitters around sub-heavy frameworks, and early-dubstep warbles ripple beneath the surface. The result is a deeply physical and finely sculpted sound - unmistakably Bristol, yet entirely SSSLIP’s own mutation of its lineage. It’s club music that balances precision and chaos, drawing from grime, dub, techno and beyond while retaining the raw DIY sensibility that defines the city’s underground. Released via Amity, a Bristol collective and label known for championing boundary-pushing artists such as Beaabea, Kessler, Honeydrip and Cassius Select, Pond Gong finds a fitting home among kindred experimenters pushing the outer edges of UK bass.
With previous releases on Grid and an upcoming EP on Banoffee Pies Records, SSSLIP continues to carve out a distinct path within the UK bass landscape. Already supported by the likes of Ransom Note, Mixmag, Jaguar, Martha, and BBC Radio 1, Pond Gong marks an evolution in both sound and intent. A bold reaffirmation of SSSLIP’s sonic identity and a celebration of Bristol’s ever-evolving underground.
