Prelude #109 by Allen Rickel

The opening of Prelude #109 is an upbeat waltz, bright and with a sense of hopefulness as if looking forward to the new year. Written in D flat major and employing a two-against-three rhythmic pattern, it feels warm and offers constant motion.

At 1:09, the tempo decreases and the key changes to F minor. Here, the feeling is darker and more tentative, as if doubt has begun to creep in and replace some of the earlier optimism. Fortunately, the positivity returns with the reprise of the opening theme.
