COWBOY JACK from ALICE'S COUNTRY by Alice C. Bateman Lyrics with Antony Martinez Music & Vocals
Lyrics
COWBOY JACK
The old Cowboy sat 'neath the stars on the range
Holding his hat, fearing nothing would change
The steers in the meadow where old Jack had camped
Were lit from below by the campfire and lamp
The stars hung above him, the herd all around
And his old guitar made it's own gentle-wind sound
Jack picked Old Git up, stroked it's neck some
Then listened to see if the wind held a song
'Bout the days on the trail and the nights long and cold
Jack's itching to tell the great stories of old
How the night frogs were smarter at predicting the rain
Than any old weather man, any old day
Of the months with the steers on a long cattle drive
And the men come and gone, most no longer alive
Of the women he'd cherished, there'd only been two
Of all of the things he never got 'round to do
And with his last breath, Cowboy Jack breathed a sigh
Gazed at the stars and an Angel up high
Shining a light more dazzling than day
On that fateful night, Cowboy Jack rode away
His guitar, Old Git, left all alone
Played softly Jack's parting, while steers softly mourned
And the stars and the wind took Old Jack safely Home
To roam with the cattle, to be no more alone
