Plays Well by Alan Licht

Many cite this 2001 release as their favorite of my solo albums. "Remington Khan" is meant in the spirit of the Byrds' Roger McGuinn's original idea of "cosmic Americana"--going from old-timey music through to futuristic electronic stuff over the course of one double album, which ultimately got split into Sweetheart of the Rodeo and The Notorious Byrd Brothers. The backing loop is inspired by a mis-remembered drone on an S. Balachander album. Henry Flynt's country-meets-raga "You Are My Everlovin'" is the big influence here, along with Jim O'Rourke's "Bad Timing." Using the Pink Floyd technique of coming up with a name from two people's names, "Remington" is the old West artist Frederic Remington, and "Khan" is the surname of many Indian classical musicians. I played this piece for several years afterwards, including another recording that appears on my "New York Minute" double CD. This was the very first performance, at a concert at New York University with Loren Connors (we each played solo, then did a duo) in November 1997

"The Old Victrola" is culled from live sets at Lounge Ax in Chicago (November 1995), the Transmissions Festival in Chapel Hill (July 2000), and the Cooler in NYC (c. 1997), and is, well, endless summer.
