Dedicated to my parents, Eric & Evelyn; and to the grumpy bus driver who caused Mum to miss her bus, giving her a sliding door chance to first meet Dad while waiting for the next bus, in 1945 wartime Carlisle.
Poet, prose writer and art critic Guillaume Apollinaire is an influence on me through his works such as Alcools, Calligrammes, The Poet Assassinated, Apollinaire On Art and his signature manifesto The New Spirit And The Poets. He was part of the Banquet Years of modern French writers and artists in the 25 years before his death two days before the Armistice ended World War 1 in November 1918. He had served in the infantry and artillery and died from injuries sustained on the battlefield earlier in the war. He created the calligramme style of poems and coined the term Surrealism. He has a café lined street named after him in the Saint Germain des Pres district of Paris.
