Musik by The Strange World of A.J. Kaufmann

The beginnings of "MUSIK", my new album for The Swamp Records USA, date back to 25 years ago Berlin.

I went to visit this city thanks to my Mother and the Goethe Institut.

Already then, I had visions of music, but no formal training or experience. It took years to gain them, and finally record my vision.

I remember staying at Mr. von Wrochem's house - a modern composer and pianist - and he used to play Chopin and Mozart on his piano every morning. I was also surrounded by books and musical instruments. I learned a lot from him and Berlin.

But, when it came to MY vision, it was pretty far from Chopin or Mozart.

I was blasting Hawkwind and Amon Duul on Mr. Johann's hi-fi system, dreaming that I could one day record my own album.

"MUSIK" is not my first album, but it's close to those psychedelic visions (no drugs at all back then) triggered by 1969/1970 sounds of freedom as heard in Berlin through killer stereo.

For "MUSIK" I used the cheapest drum sounds possible, to give an illusion this could be recorded in the era of early Kraftwerk.

I also treated voice and words as just another instrument, and added tons of echo and reverb to everything in those sessions.

I hope they reverberate forever.
