Keypatch by Bahar Khazei & Andrea Wong
“Keypatch” is the result of an electroacoustic collaboration between experimental sound artists Bahar Khazei and Andrea Wong. Inspired by the capabilities of electronics, “Keypatch" is a continuous improvisational take exploring a long-form dialogue between Andrea on the piano and Bahar on live electronics. Guided by deep listening, the two set out to create beautiful soundscapes, rich timbres, and absorbing textures.
The electronics in this album are created from a VCV Rack software patch built by Bahar. This patch builds a layered, evolving soundscape using three sequencers driving wavetable oscillators. The patterns are quantized for melodic coherence, then shaped through a VCA mixer and enriched with delay for space and movement. Multiple LFOs subtly modulate pitch, wavetable position, and other parameters, making the tones shift and morph over time. The result is a looping, hypnotic texture that feels both playful and unsettling.

Bahar Khazei, is a pianist, improviser, composer, first-generation immigrant, and educator living on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh people. Her musical background includes classical piano, free improvisation, Iranian classical music and synthesis. She makes ambient electronic music under the moniker Fide where she explores spaces where the familiar and the unfamiliar meet, leaving room for imagination and creation. In her work she often uses field recordings, synthesizers and a combination of improvised and composed sounds.

Andrea Wong is a sound artist whose musical background stems from classical piano and Canadian folk fiddle. Her passion and curiosities have led her in a pursuit of using technology to create meaningful and accessible immersive experiences. Andrea’s current musical practice is focused on creating sincere relationships and unique dialogues through free improvisation. She can be found performing on a Chinese guzheng augmented with computer electronics, and organizing her regular community series Improv Karaoke. She currently sits on the board of directors of Vancouver New Music and is active in Vancouver and Calgary.
