In Kung Fu Panda 3, Po’s nemesis asks him who he is, and Po responds by saying that he is many things all wrapped up in one. My story has some significant question marks, as I mentioned earlier, and I have often wondered who I really am. For those of you who know who your parents are and have all the usual details about your birth—place, date, time, how many inches you were, how many pounds you weighed, etc.—I have to say that I am not a little envious. It sorta does something to you not to know stuff like when your exact birth date is, not to know if you look more like your mom or your dad, not even to know whether or not you have siblings. I was assigned a birth date and I was given a name by an agent of the government where I was found. I spent a lot of my life feeling like someone that was just made up by some official who couldn’t have cared less that I even existed.

But I know that the God who made me has also been pursuing me throughout my life, showing me, as I am able to handle it, just who He made me to be. Am I an Asian? Am I a retro-80s fanatic? Am I a philosemite? Am I a handbell enthusiast? Am I a musician? Am I a writer and playwright? Am I a dancer? The answer is, YES. I am all those things and more. And I am learning every day that while being who God made me to be isn’t always easy, it is always worth the journey.
