Hemingway by acousticmichigan

In his remarks during his acceptance speech for the Nobel Prize in Literature Hemingway stated:

"Things may not be immediately discernible in what a man writes..."

Hemingway spent the summers of his youth tromping the woods of Northern Michigan, and fishing her lakes and streams. Those experiences were the basis for his Nick Adams stories.

As the Solomon of the 20th Century Hemingway annotates the book of Ecclesiastes through his stories and life of action. In the end, through his crowning achievement in literature he explains it all, if we will but "hear the conclusion of the whole matter."

Despite the fact that many thought him to be an atheist, Hemingway writes the Gospel in letters too large to see. For, "a writer should write what he has to say, and not speak it." The seemingly mysterious inclusions of a Nick Adams story in various works, it becomes increasingly clear, he captures the life cycle of a man. The crowning achievement in his works is also the capstone of his effort to this end.

Now an old man, he is known to the people by a new name, and catching bigger fish than he caught so often in "Up North" Michigan. The old man finally understands and is redeemed among the people by the blood of his brother, dripping from his own hand. The passer-byes obtain no sense of the monumental struggle that went before and are content with their casually obtained mistaken identity of the fish as a shark. But followers of Hemingway know what is "below the surface."
